Profile

I am Arij Azizi from Tunisia. I hold a Master’s degree in Applied Geology from the Faculty of Sciences of Bizerte at the University of Carthage. My Master's research involved assessing organic pollution, specifically PAHs, PCBs, and pesticides, in the waters and sediments of the Wadi Rmel watershed in Zaghouan, Northeastern Tunisia.

I am currently a PhD candidate under a cotutelle agreement between the University of Carthage (Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences of Bizerte) and the University of Florence (Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Forestry Sciences and Technologies - DAGRI).

Research interests and PhD project

My PhD research aims to develop an integrated hydrogeological model for a semi-arid Mediterranean context by coupling hydrological data, major ion chemistry, isotopic tracers, and emerging contaminant analyses. The goal is to understand recharge dynamics, mixing mechanisms, and pollution pathways.

The study also investigates the evolution of hydrochemical composition and mineralization processes, identifies zones vulnerable to contamination from surface water infiltration, and evaluates anthropogenic impacts on groundwater quality. Ultimately, this integrated approach will provide scientific recommendations for the sustainable management and protection of water resources.

Research interests include:

  • Surface water–groundwater interactions
  • Aquifer recharge and vulnerability assessment
  • Hydrogeochemistry and isotope investigations
  • Groundwater quality processes and emerging contaminants
  • Sustainable water resource management in semi-arid regions
